Songs of Freedom, the Bob Marley box set, is a beautiful collection from the greatest musical genius of all time. There is really no way to quantify the positive vibrations that this set will bring about. Each disc represents a part of nature and allows the listener to follow the life and music of Bob Marley. From his humble beginnings to his worldwide fame and ultimately his untimely demise, this was an artist who changed the world. Marley can be many things to many different fans, and this collection is ample evidence of this. This set was given to me a number of years ago as a gift from family members who were not what you would call reggae fans, however, when they listened to a sampling of the work they immediately asked me to dub a tape of my favorites for them to listen to on their own. My 3 year old daughter loves to dance to many of smooth beats and buoyant lyrics contained within this set. This is the magic of Marley, the same people who would be put off by Bob smoking a joint on the cover, can be converted with one listen to the magic of the music. My personal favorite is disc 3 which contains Three Little Birds,Natural Mystic(absolutely incredible song!!), Exodus and Jah Live.
Disc 1 is the young, playful Marley featuring One Cup of Coffee, Bend Down Low, Stir It Up,Simmer Down and more. This is the foundation that would provide the base for Marley to grow both spiritually and as a musician. Disc 4 is the political and militant Marley, knowing of his power and influence and using to spread knowledge and hope across the world.
This set is a must have for any reggae fan, or person wishing to experience beautiful music from a poet and a prophet. There is something for everyone on this collection. The original box set also comes with an outstanding discography and booklet featuring a ton of Marley history. It will be worth the extra effort to find an original issue and learn the background of this reggae god.
