Product Review

Yamaha Excellence

by   jeeper ,   Sep 1, 2001

Pros:  quality highs; styling

Cons:  less than great lows; stands

The Bottom Line:  This Yamaha speaker model is excellent for quality sound be it popular or classical music. However, a powered sub-woofer is highly recommended for quality lows.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I actually went out to purchase Sony's 600 floor speakers. But, after hearing them compared I decided on this Yamaha model.

The choice came down to this model (NS-A100XT) and its bigger brother (NS-A200XT). The differences between the two models are: 6 1/2" woofer versus a 8" woofer, slightly better frequency response, 10 more nominal and 20 more maximum input watts, and a multi-chambered internally braced cabinet. However, the biggest difference is $100.

I enjoy a variety of music including anything from classical to popular to metal. It was very easy to pick up the individual instruments and the sound quality was nothing short of excellent.

However, on certain music the deficiency of these speakers came through -- the lows. This wasn't an issue for me, because I have a Yamaha powered sub-woofer. Luckily, the sub-woofer filled in what was missing from these speakers.

The speakers themselves are very attractive. The main case is black with a gray screen and trim. The stands are black covered particle board which is one of my complaints of this model. The demo speaker stands at the store were hacked up pretty bad, but I really didn't think to much of it. However, when I was carrying the heavy things to my home I discovered that they aren't packed well in the box, because they kept banging around. My stand already has a spot where the black finish is coming off. Ironically, the box states how well the product is packed.

I've listened to all ranges of music on these speakers and also watched a few movies with DTS sound, and I'm completely in love. Despite a few minor shortcomings these are excellent intermediate level speakers.
