hate to go against the grain but...

The Bottom Line: Although I left the game due to the expansion, there were other reasons, and the expansion allowed an excuse. The Expack is better than the original.
I played hundreds of hours, actually make that OVER a hundred DAYS of the original warcraft and the expansion gave me the perfect excuse to run away and finish my college career.
The expansion killed the 40 man raids, which was what I loved most about the original game, and the expansion has put a HUGE emphasis on "farming" reputation with the new Outland content. The whole game has been reset, and I, a player that was at the end of the original, had no interest in starting over
but I did for awhile.
The truth is the expansion kicks the original games butt in almost every way. The outland quests are unique the instances are more challenging and the rewards more easily acquired by all (though more tediously). The original game allowed the players to acquire mounts that would take the player across the land at great speeds; the outland offers the ability to acquire flying mounts that will take you across the sky at even greater speeds.
The Burning Crusade is undoubtedly a lot of fun, but it was my escape as well. I have a lot of friends whom still play the game, and they seem to still enjoy it, however are not to fond of the "starting all over" feeling they now have.
