Working Mother Magazine

Recently "Working Mother" released an article naming the "Top 100 Companies for Working Mothers". I worked for one of those companies and as much as I am a firm believer in saying nothing negative about a previous employer, I simply had to dispute!! I worked for MetLife and am a single mother. I am not sure who you interviewed for this article from each of the companies but as a single parent and now ex-employee of MetLife I feel must set the record straight. MetLife is by no stretch of the imagination a "family-friendly" company!! I am flabbergasted that "Working Mother" actually put them on such a list!! I am only one of the single parents that had to leave the company because of the unrealistic expectations set!! While interviewing for MetLife I clearly stated that I was a single mother and that I use my vacation time for my child when he is ill. The interviewer and later my supervisor said that was not a problem because she too was a working mother. I had plenty of vacation as a matter of fact I had almost a week of vacation left when I resigned. After using 3 days I was verbally warned. When I asked her about our conversation during the interview re vacation she stated she conveniently didn't recall it. I went to Human Resources who were no help at all , and later the V.P. of Human Resources who didn't even have the courtesy to respond. I also addressed the matter with my manager who was unable to assist me. When I asked each the question of why wasn't I told that we weren't allowed to call in for our ill children when I addressed the issue during the interview not one of these people had an answer for me. In closing I would like to say MetLife is a great place to work, as long as you don't get sick, your children never get sick, you never have an emergency and you do not have any responsibilities outside of work. As for "Working Mother" i ask that you please research these article a little further talk to the employees they are your best source of information!!
