Author's Review
To fully understand my review, you need to know the operational environment of my refrigerator. The refrigerator handles the daily abuse of six people. Four adults and two teens. So relative to your environment, you can estimate the amount of use (or abuse) it would get.
After fourteen months, I have found that the refrigerator has stood up well over time. Only two failures have occurred.
1) One month out of warranty. The ice maker module died.
2) One of the door handles came loose.
Regarding the problems I encountered and their solutions:
1) Ice maker module. I called Whirlpool customer service. They promptly sent out their local authorized repair shop. He confirmed that the ice maker module was completely non-functional. He told us he would have to order one and it would take 5 to 10 working days. Let's just say it took much longer than that to get the part from Whirlpool. Meanwhile, I could have done the repair myself by ordering an aftermarket part from an online shop.
Wait! It gets better. Since the refrigerator was only a couple weeks out of warranty, I called Whirlpool. I talked to the customer service rep about seeing if Whirlpool would budge on at least covering the part or labor costs. Nope! Ok, so that was not surprising. I asked to speak to a supervisor and I was rather rudely informed that her decisions are final and that she would not transfer me to a supervisor. Wow! That left a very bad taste in my mouth. She was not service oriented at all. Bad business here. Even if the supervisor were to say "Sorry sir, our policy does not allow us to do this." Shutting down a customer at the front door is simply wrong. At least this consumer felt like it. That's just me Epinion.
Lesson learned: I might be willing to advise that you avoid the manufacturer and just go with your location reputable repair shop. Whirlpool sent me a horrible repair service that was not customer service oriented and far from timely.
2) Loose handle. The repair service showed me how to fix this. It's rather simple. I also found the answer on an appliance repair forum. So many problems can be answered by asking the question on a simple forum. Dig around Google and you'll find them out there.
A word of warning. STAINLESS STEEL. Expect to clean the outside of the refrigerator every couple of weeks with a polish. Fingerprints and smudges galore! If you let it sit too long it really starts to look dirty. Some other manufacturers offer a SATIN stainless steel look alike that prides it self on the look of stainless steel without the fingerprints. I believe the black handles are by design. Some people want stainless steel handles. I think that would be a huge mistake based on my observations.
One more word of warning for the road. Watch out when you change the water filter. Due to loss of pressure, the water will start freely pouring out of the spigot, whether the lever is depressed or not.
In conclusion, I would say this is a great refrigerator. Unfortunately the ice maker has ceased to function a bit too early for a refrigerator this expensive. And the fact that you are spending 2,000 dollars for a refrigerator and Whirlpool will not budge is rather INSANE to me. I'd take better care of my customers.
