Weezer Rocks!

Date of Review: Jun 13, 2001

The Bottom Line:  Buy it. Buy it now. You won't regret it.
I'm not going to bore you with the long and winded tale of my life, I'm not going to talk about "guitar crunches" and jamming. I'm not going to fudge the whole CD over. Because Weezer deserve MORE.

So here is my opinion, straight-forward and simple.

The first song I ever heard by weezer was "Buddy Holly". I was standing in the bar at uni where there was a band comp and one of the bands came out with this amazing song. And everyone started yelling out Weezer! This is when I fell in love with Buddy Holly. It's great.

It's really a song about dealing with who you are and knowing that you only have to please yourself and no one else. "I don't care what they say about us anyway, I don't care about that!"

Many of Weezer's songs (From their self-titled album) are about dealing with the world around us. They are about the little things that bug us and get us down and things that we take for granted. For instance:

The World Has turned and left me here: It's all about a messy break-up. The song talks about how the memories are still very much a part of life and that it seems as if the world gets further and further away with each passing day.

Surf Wax America: This guy went out to face his fears (if you listen closely, he talks about being frightened by the waves) and never comes back. Very metaphorical. The lyrics are really very beautiful and this song is one of my favourites. Here is a sample of the lyrics-
"All around the under-tow is strengthening it's hold,
I never thought it would come to this,
Now I can never go home."

In the Garage: This song is about finding a comfort zone and hiding from the world. We all do this- it's our way of escaping. The Garage (metaphorically) is a place where we feel safe and can really be ourselves. We don't have to worry about what everyone else thinks of us or how we will be judged by others if we express ourselves in our own unique way. "In the garage, I feel safe. No one cares about my ways."

The music is really very lyrical, and so easy to sing along to. Most people can relate to it and it's inoffensive even when you play it full blast on your car's audio system with the windows wound right down. The guitar and vocals are just mind-blowing. So simple and yet very carefully crafted. Not a swear word on the whole CD (rare that that happens at all now-a-days!).

After a little more research...I finally came to a site that actually offers previews of weezer's songs. Here is the address- you may have to cut and paste this into your address line at the top of the screen. It's well worth a look if you still aren't sure.
