Author's Review
Everyone has some of those movies that you can watch over and over again, and even though you may know what is coming next, it doesn't ruin the movie for you. In fact, it actually creates an extra level of enjoyment for you, because you know when the great parts are about to come. For me, The Wedding Singer is one of those films. Starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the Wedding Singer is of course, about a wedding singer. Adam Sandler is that wedding singer, who provides the entertainment at all types of events. The best part about it, is that it is Sandler singing all of the songs himself, and it makes the film that much more funny as we get to see him acting through all types of moods. When he is happy and content he performs one way, and when he is angry or down, the performances come of darker, but no less funny to the audience. The Wedding Singer is a movie based in 1985, which takes the best parts of the 80's and intertwines them into a romantic comedy between Sandler and Barrymore. What it comes off as being, is a great comedy that is one of my favorite films.
The romance of The Wedding Singer is almost entirely under wraps, and it is left up to the audience to see or feel the emotions for the main characters. At the beginning of the film, both Sandler's and Barrymore's characters are engaged, so it wouldn't seem like the story would be about them getting together. But, as the movie progresses, you can see them slowly falling for each other, and it can only be a matter of time before they fall in love right? Well the best parts of the film are when they are on-screen together, and it is a lot of fun to watch the awkwardness of their characters played off in side-splitting jokes, and cute moments that you won't soon forget. So, if you are looking for a category to put this film in, it is surely a romantic comedy, but for people who aren't really into the romantic side of things, this is a hilarious movie that doesn't end up being too mushy for the average viewer.
Besides Sandler and Barrymore, there are a host of other actors/actress that make the film very fun to watch. Steve Bucshemi plays the brother of someone getting married while Sandler is hosting, and is entertaining as a drunk who just doesnt know when to stay quite. Christine Taylor plays Barrymore's best friend, and though she develops an interest for Robbie (Sandler), she soon realizes (just as the audience has) that he has a thing for Julia (Barrymore). Taylor is your typical 80's girl, constantly wanting her image to be at the tip of the fashion-scale, and it is clear that she idolizes Madonna from most of her outfits. Having been hurt before, it seems that Robbie is the only one left who doesn't realize how much he has started liking Julia. With the warm-heartedness that Julia is putting off, and the charm that is gushing from Robbie, these two seem like the perfect fit for each other if only life will let them get on the same page.
The Wedding Singer has a lot of stars within the cast, but if I had to pin down what the best part of the movie is, I would have to say that it is the music. From the beginning until the credits of the film, there are a ton of 1980's musical hits put into the seams that help turn this into a great movie. In fact, you could find yourself watching the movie JUST for the music that it has been included. The music turned into two full albums that can be bought as well. You can't overstate what the music brings to The Wedding Singer, and it is just as good as having a narrator for the movie, because it ties all of the scenes together, and the lyrics are used so well, that we are carried along with the same emotions that the actors are feeling. Watching The Wedding Singer, you can't help but hope that Robbie and Julia are going to end up together, but it seems that there are so many things standing in their way that it won't be possible. Hanging on for the ride to see what happens in the end is a great reason why The Wedding Singer turned out to be such a winner. I highly recommend this movie, and give it an enthusiastic 5 star recommendation.
