Author's Review
Let me say first of all that I am a very big fan of the Undertaker, with that said, this DVD was a huge disapointment.
I was down at the local shopping center one day & I made my usual trip to the PS2 games section followed by the WWE section. After about 5 or so minutes looking at the games I walked directly to the wrestling section. After 30 seconds "Undertaker: He Buries Them Alive" caught my eye. I did a mental back flip because I am a huge fan of the Undertaker, especially his "old school" days & much to my delight this was a compilation of "five classic matches"(in case you somehow missed the quotation marks, "five classic matches" is what it said on the back of the case, NOT my opinion) & with that knowledge I went home to get the $25 it costed & came back and bought it without a second thought. It wasn't 'til I got home that I actually read the back of the case & the entire contents of the DVD was 5 matches. No interviews, no footage & no documentaries were present. That scared me, but I still had hopes that the matches would be good. So I put the DVD in my trusty PS2 &.....
DVD Contents:
Probably one of my favourite things about this DVD is that the matches are introduced by "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase(who was one of my favourite wrestlers back in the day), I was surprised to see Ted but definately not disappointed. He was as entertaining as ever with a few of his classic mannerisms thrown in.(Jeez, im talking more about the host than the actual DVD, kinda gives you an idea of the rest of the DVD though, doesn't it?)
Undertaker Vs. Undertaker
When I saw this match on the back of the case I thought "wow, what a typo", but it turned out that this match was actually real & not a figment of my imagination. Any way the story was that Paul Bearer & Ted Dibiase had their own Undertaker & this was the match that decided who the true Undertaker was. After I found out the story behind this match I thought the "classic" on the back of the case was speaking the truth. About 10-15 minutes later I was disapointed. The match was made up entirely of punches & throat thrusts until the end when Paul Bearer's Undertaker Tombstone Piledrived Dibiase's Undertaker 3 times in a row for the win. Even the announcers sounded bored in this match saying the lack of crowd reaction was due to the shock of 2 Undertakers, not the fact that the match stunk more than a dead fish thats been rotting for two weeks.
Undertaker Vs. Kwang
Kwang's gimmick was that he is a martial arts expert, but in all the matches i've seen him in, all he's done is throw a few asian style chops and a basic kick which i've seen Yokozuna do better. Any way this match was a little better than the previous but still nothing great. After Undertaker dominating the match he finished it with a choke slam. Kwang definately is nothing compared to Rob Van Dam.
Undertaker Vs. Yokozuna
Yokozuna was the biggest wrestler weight-wise(tallest would go to Giant Gonzales), weighing in at 650 pounds at his peak weight. And no, he wasn't a giant either(only about 6'3) & he managed to out way The Big Show by 150 pounds. His weight was good and bad, good because it would be convincing if he ended the match with a leg drop, but bad because there was little opponents could do with him(I don't think even Brock Lesnar could pick up Yokozuna). So as a result this match was mostly brawling. One highlight was that Chuck Norris was at ringside to intercept anyone who was stupid enough to interfere in the match. Bam Bam Bigelow interfered and got the famous Norris side kick. The match ended when Undertaker through Yokozuna into the casket he brought to ringside.
Undertaker Vs. Jim Neidhart
The match starts with Owen Hart & Jim Neidhart outside the ring not looking to keen on taking on the Undertaker. Eventually after a game of chicken Undertaker catches and dominates Jim for the remainder of the match. The highlight was Owen Hart being at ringside, because he did his classic cocky rant along with a few other Owenisms. You may have noticed that I enjoyed the shananigans outside the match more than the match itself. Well just more evidence on the quality of the matches. This match ended with Jim Neidhart running away and getting counted out.
Undertaker Vs. Jerry "the king" Lawler
My favourite match on the DVD. This wasn't a "wrestling" display, just a good show of the more psychological side of wrestling. Jerry Lawler, as cocky as his character is, he is a very giving man in and out of the ring. More then willing to make a BIG idiot out of himself in the name of the company, Jerry is a dedicated worker who will do anything for wrestling. This match was good because it captured Lawler doing what he does best & thats playing the coward. The only time he had the advantage during the match was via a low blow or use of a foreign object. After many shortcuts taken by Lawler(including a speedy crawl he used to get away), the match ended with the Tombstone Piledriver.
Motley Kids Final Thoughts
This compilation really failed to capture the "old school" 'taker at his best. God,if I didn't know better i'd say a jealous brother of the Undetaker(Kane im looking in your direction) took the 'taker's most boring matches from his old school days put them on this DVD to make even his most loyal fans yawn. Why would Kane do this? Well does revenge for repeated defeats at Wrestlemania sound like a good motive? In all seriousness, fun moments on this DVD are few and far between & only someone who must own everything to do with the Undertaker should bother with this one. For the ultimate insight to the early years of the Undertaker look elsewhere. I could've bought a full 3 hour pay per view with the money I spent on this. All you get with this compilation is 1 hour. Total.
