Good ride from VW
Date of Review: Nov 5, 2008
The Bottom Line: Good driving qualities makes this vehicle an good lease and a decent buy.
I was lucky to have a 2008 VW Jetta 2.5 as a 7 day rental while vacationing in California. The Chrysler PT Cruiser they tried to dump on me was not sitting well with my family and I. A bit of tactful negotiations got us a much better vehicle at no additional cost. We drove from LA to San Diego, then up the coastal highway to San Francisco giving this car a very thorough test drive.
The 2.5 engine is somewhat smooth and responsive in town and on the highway. Going through the coastal highway with its hills, twists and turns, the 08 Jetta displayed some good driving characteristics. You will always have a good feel of the road with some nice responsiveness from the wheel, handling, engine and brakes.
Inside, the vehicle has a nicely appointed interior. The kids loved the rear A/C vents and were quite comfortable in the back of the sedan. Outside, VW did a good job re-styling the 08 model with a modern and appealing look for the sedan.
Unfortunately, the fuel economy is disappointing for the 2.5 engine - especially in the city. On the highway we expected 29-30 miles to the gallon but got something closer to 25-27.
If you are planning to buy this car, keep in mind the upper models are quite pricey compared to the base "CITY" Jetta with an older, smaller engine and more spartan interior. Typical VW expensive maintenance and questionable long term reliability might be the same with the 08 Jetta.
Still, this vehicle is a nice ride. Those in the 23-30 age range are most likely a good fit. It's also a good car for moms with a little more spending money that want something that doesn't say "mom's taxi".
