Product Review

More than meets the eye

by   pervertedewok ,   Jan 21, 2007

Pros:  Aux, SD, USB, removable faceplate. No premature skipping in mp3 mode.

Cons:  Frame has a lip that is not removable.

The Bottom Line:  For the money, it has a ton of features. Biggest issues from other reviews have been addressed in a new revision.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought the unit Dec 2006 from Walmart. It was not mounted in the display area, but sitting on the shelf under the connection wires.

Several people who wrote earlier reviews seem to have had some bad experiences and some have had some decent ones. I would like to provide an explanation.

Upon looking at the user's manual the picture of the head unit. The AUX jack is in the upper right hand corner in the user's manual.

The unit I bought from Walmart has the AUX jack at the lower right hand side of the faceplate.

I venture to guess that the unit I have is a new, improved revision.

While previous reviewers have said that the music cuts out on mp3 playback prior to the next song. This does not occur in the unit that I bought. I have tried with CDRWs, SD and USB media.

The only real issue is that the unit does not have a removable plastic frame. On my 97 Camry, the factory head unit faceplate was only as wide as the unit itself. The VRCD400-SDU has about a 1/4 non-removable lip on the frame.

The unit comes with a remote, Aux connector, mounting hardware and a "harness" that is wires on one end. I tinned the steel wires with solder and plugged the wires into the Toyota harness. I found the wiring harness schematics online for my car. The wiring on the head unit side is labelled on the wires themselves and in the manual.

Considering the features and aggressive pricing, I have no hesitation in recommending this unit. For $80 I don't expect it to last forever.
