Terrific device to own
Date of Review: Jan 10, 2007
The Bottom Line: Once purchased and used with available portable software, it becomes an indispensable device.
Purchased this "thumb" drive 2 years ago and I am very pleased with it. This USB device does not have the U3 system installed like so many of the current drives on the market but in my opinion this is a good thing. The U3 menu system leaves data in the Windows registry.
When the Store N' Go was purchased, it was mainly for transferring files between computers. Discovery of programs written specifically for USB drives have made it invaluable.
The LED activity lights use two colors to indicate the unit's status. Blue for USB 2.0 activity and Red for the slower USB 1.1 activity. Read and write data transfers show fast flashing of the Blue/Red LED and slow flashing indicate that the device is recognized by the computer it's inserted into but it is inactive.
Use in Windows 98SE requires a special driver that is loaded on the device when purchased. I have personally copied this driver onto a floppy for occasions that require Win98 insertions (rare).
Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP automatically detect the device and load the required driver when inserted. I understand that there are USB device drivers for LINUX but have not used them myself.
Not all USB drives are created equal. The Verbatim Pro drive has very good transfer speeds which make it seem like a integrated part of any USB 2.0 computer it is used on. The transfer speeds are fast!
The USB connector cap is not attached to the main body of the drive which could be a problem. In two years of use, I have not lost it yet but I always set the cap near the drive at all times, so as not to forget it when removing. There is also an included strap that attaches to the end of the drive so that it can be slung around the owners neck for transport.
The drive body is small enough that inserting USB cables beside or above/below it has not been a problem as well.
After two years, is has grown to be a constant companion that can be inserted into most computers for information look up and data transfer.
