Toyota Celica, Anyone?

Date of Review: Feb 1, 2002

The Bottom Line:  This is a fun slick little car to zip around town, however, it cannot hold very much cargo-wise. For fun and general driving around town, this car is excellent.
My husband bought me a 1999 Toyota Celica GT convertible. It was black with a black bra and let me tell you... in my town where Ford Mustangs and Chevy Camaros are as common as a housefly, this clean-lined flashy little car certainly held its own. As my first sports car purchase, I drove everywhere I could. In the months that we have had it we have noticed several things about the convertible model in particular. The seats are beginning to look very worn and it is the beginning of 2002... not a very good track record. The trimmings also tend to wear down... the inside door handles cracked, the convertible top has already needed replacing (thankfully we bought the warranty), the rear quarter windows both went out, among many others. Although this car is fun to drive and something to look at, unless you buy the bumper to bumper it will either cost you a lot of money to keep up (the money-pit syndrome) or become shabby rather quickly. As for the perks, everything on the panel (AC, cd player, radio, etc) is in perfect reaching distance. The front seats are comfortable and there is plenty of leg room, however, the back seats stick straight up and are hard and cramped. The convertible top requires simply the push of a button to roll back. It also has a manual switch if the motor should go out. However, a bad thing about the top is that it doesn't hide completely, so if you want to hide it and make the car look sleek with the top down, you will need the "boot" which is cumbersome to put on and store in the trunk. It virtually takes up all the trunk space. We have never had any engine problems at all.
