What do I enjoy about this car
First of all, I don't know why someone would purchase the 4-Cyl. version of this car. Possibly because there are only a handful of the V6 98' Camry's. And its not that the 4-cyl. is a slouch, but compared to other car's in its class, it could be better. If you're going to purchase a Camry, don't go with anything less than the V6. With 194HP, it rivals the Pontiac Grand Prix for power, while also being one of the nimblest cars on the road in its class. Driving through Alaska, I've had my fair share of near misses with animals, and the braking and maneuvering were second to none. With a V6 engine, you'll have no trouble's passing or merging, and you'll never feel underpowered.
For the music aficionado, the Double-Din dash can afford you the ability to purchase a nice DD Pioneer stereo, or install a CD player and monitor for those long drives. You can also install speakers in the door near the steering wheel.
There is plenty of room for 5 people. I'm 6'4", and most of the time, I have trouble fitting in most cars, but not in the Camry; it fits like a glove.
Whats are the problems?
The only problems I have are with 1) The rear speakers and 2) The Dash.
The rear speakers, when you look at them through the trunk, are simply hanging there. Easy to access, but easier to damage. The Dash. Very-much-so lacking for information. Says very little except for the basic necessities, and well, some of us want more. Not a big problem, but still a problem
Update on 12/14/2000
Its been almost 10 months now since I first purchased this car, and there's a few things to say about it. First off, I'm still very glad I bought this car. Its the best car I've ever owned (and only having owned two cars before this, thats not saying alot) and here's why: its always reliable. This should be expected, I guess, in a newer car under 40,000 miles, but I just love the fact that I can make long drives and really not have to worry about something going wrong on the way there. I've made about 10 600+ mile trips since I bought the car, and not a single problem has occurred.
Secondly, its now winter. Before, I either had 4WD or a 4x4 truck, so moving to a FWD car made things interesting. Would I spin out or lose control easily? To my surprise, I have had trouble getting it to do both of those. The ABS is incredible, snapping on instantly when traction is lost, and I've yet to spin left or right when putting on the breaks, even when slamming them. Accelerating does cause spin, but I purchased some Cooper tires with studs, and that problem's gone.
I recommend you don't purchase a dark car. This goes for any car. If you have the money to constantly detail all the dings and scratches, thats great. I don't, and I hate seeing the new scratches from rocks and whatnot every day. My next car purchase will be of a color that doesn't show scratches so well.
I've also upgraded the sound system, and this was not a problem to get installed. Some cars can cause problems for the installer; I was told this car was a breeze.
Bottom Line
Its seven months since I got the car, and I'm still in love. I'm still glad I made the purchase, and got it for the price I did. I can see why this car is the #1 selling car in America 3 years running. Its so nice to drive, and so nice to look at. But, to be honest, please go test drive it yourself, or any car, while at the same time looking at these reviews. You'll then realize why I say what I do when you've hopped into one and took it for a spin yourself.
