Product Review

Will NOT Properly Fit 3 in 1 Cribs (at least mine!)

by   mommytothree79 ,   May 2, 2007

Pros:  Will fulfull purpose wonderfully, top-quality construction, video directions on website helpful- must watch.

Cons:  Standard-sized crib does not insure proper fit, depends on crib design; price.

The Bottom Line:  Buy if concerned about your little climber/nosy pets- might have to buy new crib if it does not fit properly. Seems to hold value well for resale.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Our 19 month old daughter has so far climbed out of her playpen twice recently, which led me to worry over her falling out of her crib, so that's what led me to search for a crib tent. She is tall for her age and started walking at 8 1/2 months, so I worried she would feel confident enough to try and climb out of her crib eventually. So I searched for crib tents because I have seen them before while browsing for other baby products in the past. The Cozy Crib Tent was the only product I found and I decided to go for the II (with surround net) for the extra stability that the mattress resting on the bottom would provide and the safety factor as well. I found the best price on ebay, although because I wouldn't settle for a used one I still had to pay $70 with shipping.

Assembly:
PLEASE: Watch the video instructions on the Tots in Mind website for the cozy crib tent II, it actually HELPED! I watched the video before I purchased it to see whether or not I could tell if it would work with our crib. I read another review that said it only works on standard cribs but ours is a standard-SIZED crib and even after I watched I thought it would be okay. (I was wrong- more on that later.) Anyway, assembly couldn't really be easier, like I said watch the video first and then even during assembly and you will have absolutely no problems.

Quality:
The quality is *****, I couldn't ask for a better made product for this purpose. The velcro is SUPER-STRONG (almost too strong- it made my hands raw while adjusting!) and the mesh is slightly stretchy but not too much so. The zipper is nice and smooth and the rods and rod-pockets will not break under any circumstance. The seams also give me no worry at all that they will tear. I wondered why the price was so high, and I believe it is because the quality is superior (and they have a monopoly over this product!)

Fit:
Well, as you could see by the title of my review, obviously everything wasn't smelling like roses in the nursery as I was trying to fit this on my crib. I have a 3 in 1 crib, I believe it is also known as a lifetime or forever crib, where it is 1. a baby crib 2. a toddler bed and 3. the head- and footboards for a full-sized bed for older kids and adults. So that means that the sides of my particular crib are not "arched" like you would see the sides of the crib in the video are, so the velcro straps that attach near the top of the sides don't really go around much. Also the slats of my crib are wide and some of the velcro straps that attach the dome to the crib rail don't match up with a space between the slats so that velcro would be all twisted to reach the nearest space. The BIGGEST problem was that the back of my crib (meaning the longest side that does not go down for easier access) is arched and the top rail is a very wide piece of wood, for decorative purposes when it is being used as a headboard. So, the dome is supposed to rest on all 4 corners of the rail and on my crib it can only rest on top of the rail in the front. Even if I got it to rest on the rear rail then the surround net would be pulled up too high and the mattress would not touch the frame! So, even though it specifically says that structural integrity would not be achieved without all 4 corners resting on the rail, I made it happen on my crib even with only the front 2 corners resting on top of the rail. Also it says not to use any extra velcro, rope, string, etc to attach it to the crib; I did to insure the rear of the tent stayed up on that side and didn't fall down. Obviously I cannot recommend to do this to your crib tent, but I am 100% confident of the safety and structural integrity of my tent even though it is not attached properly.

Conclusion:
Before I figured out a way to safely if wrongly attach my tent to my crib, I was panicked because what other way can I insure my daughter doesn't climb out of her crib and most likely badly injure herself? She is too young for a toddler bed and the tent was and still is the only thing I can think of to make sure everyone sleeps safe and sound (her safe and me sound). So, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase and can gladly recommend it to anyone with a standard crib, meaning standard sized and standard-use (no lifetime cribs! Unless you want to be a rebel and invent your own directions.) Yes, I even had the thought that we should buy a regular crib for now, she can use her lifetime crib when she is ready for a toddler bed, even though we spent almost $300 on it. However, once I thought about it and experimented a bit, I attached the tent in a way even I am 100% satisfied with, and I am a super-paranoid mom when it comes to her safety. But for the general public, I am officially saying return the tent if it doesn't fit properly, and having a standard sized crib does NOT insure it will fit right, it depends on the style and design.
