Poor hardware Poor warranty

My First DVD player was a Toshiba SD-4990.  After playing about 4 movies, it quit working. Checking the internet, the reviews were pretty bad, which I thought unusual. I returned and they replaced with a SD 6100 a newer supposedly better unit  (warranty 90 day labor 1 year parts whatever that means)
The new unit came and the box looked like a gorilla had jumped on it. I contacted UPS and they said if nobody comes in 5 days, the unit is mine to keep.
Toshiba would not replace without me sending the damaged one back. Go figure, I'm sure they were reimbursed. The packaging was very poor beside!
Toshiba sent a second SD 6100 and that lasted for say 3-4 hours use. I contacted Toshiba and they said that my "warranty" was expired and that they now only warranty for 6 months.
I spent more time packaging and mailing these units than watching movies.
They have my money, I have nothing. This has been a very disappointing experience.
