Bad long term bulb life kills a great TV
Date of Review: Mar 19, 2008
The Bottom Line: I cannot recommend a product when the manufacture will not stand behind it.
My friend bought this model television which is essentially the same as the previous year's 62MX195 model I reviewed in that it uses the same bulb and same TALEN (TN) light engine. This post is on topic because model numbers change from year to year and technology doesn't. It makes no sense to post a review for only a model that is no longer available.
My experience has been consistent bulb failure after 11 months of use. I have gotten about 45% of the "Average" usage from a bulb Toshiba claims. Toshiba has an extended warranty for this known issue but will not apply it to my TV. The "support" person was not willing to assist.
His experience has been two bulb replacements in less than a year and a half. We are waiting to see if one can make it to the 11 month mark.
The good news is that bulbs are no longer $500. They can be had on the net for about $250. Stock up, or insist on an extended warranty (usually a waste of money) that covers bulbs (plural).
Now why must you feel like you must stll buy this TV? Because it is AWESOME otherwise. The TV guide is great and the features are abundant. The size is compact in that the speakers are under the screen and not too big. The picture is truly amazing.
