A delightful, comic time travel extravaganza

Date of Review:  Jan 14, 2000
Review: It's definitely a love-hate thing I have with Connie Willis. The inimitable style of this Queen of the Non Sequiturs is vividly on display in To Say Nothing of the Dog, a Hugo Award-winning time travel saga brimming with seemingly random...

To Say Nothing of the Science Fiction

Date of Review:  Oct 23, 2001
The Bottom Line: This book tries too hard to be all things to all people and fails. Don't expect brilliant science fiction but rather a screwball comedy and you'll still enjoy it.
Review: I've been hearing the name Connie Willis for quite some time. I freely admit I am a geek with a geek's love for science fiction. I hang out with other geeks who share that love and we sometimes talk about our favorite books, stories, and authors...

Hooray, Ms. Willis!

Date of Review:  Sep 8, 1999
Review: "To Say Nothing of the Dog" is a rough sequel to the 1993 Hugo Award Winning "Doomsday Book". While the plots are completely dissimilar (England in the Victorian Era, England in the Dark Ages), the common thread of time travel remains.

An English Treasure

Date of Review:  Dec 21, 1999
Review: I purchased this book because the title intrigued me. I did not know the author and at that time the book had not been nominated for any literary awards.

In order to enjoy this story you must get through the first couple of chapters which...

Willis: a comedy of manners and pet preferences

Date of Review:  Jul 30, 2000
Review: The frighteningly rich and appallingly mannered Lady Schrapnell has invaded Oxford University's time travel research project, promising to endow it if they help her rebuild Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed during an air raid in World War II...

Amusing, but way too long

Date of Review:  Sep 9, 1999
Review: To Say Nothing of the Dog reminds of other books written by former Brits residing in America or by Anglophyles. They're just trying too hard to be british, and it is felt in this book.

This book was not bad, but I still can't understand why...

Great fun, but not everyone's cup of tea

Date of Review:  Sep 9, 1999
Review: Until I read "To Say Nothing of the Dog" , I wouldn't have thought it possible
for anyone to write a really good humorous science fiction mystery novel.
Certainly not one where the reader keeps tripping over allusions to several famous

Ms Willis Has Invented her Own Sub-Genre

Date of Review:  May 28, 2000
The Bottom Line: I may grouch about the sub-genre, but Ms Willis is obviously highly successful at her game.
Review: To Say Nothing of the Dog, Connie Willis, Bantam Spectra Books, 1540 Broadway, New York NY 10036, January 1998, ISBN 0-553-57538-4, paperback, 493 pages, US $6.50, CAN $8.99

And just what is a Bishop's Bird Stump?

Date of Review:  Nov 14, 2000
Review: Connie Willis is always a delightful read. And this was a choice example of what makes her books so very much fun to read. Willis knows well the old adage "fools rush in where angels fear to tread". The main characters in her books are the fearing...

What dog?

Date of Review:  Apr 25, 2001
The Bottom Line: A truly individual book written in Willis` very individual style.
Review: "To say nothing of the dog" was the sub-title for Jerome K.Jeromes novel "Three Men in a Boat" and lo and behold the dog ,Montmorency and the three men make cameo appearances in Willis` novel of screwball comedy,time-travel and Victorian ideals...
