Oh, TiVo, I don't even know where to begin...
I am absolutely in LOVE with this device. Not long after my friend purchased a TiVo for himself, my boyfriend and I both became enthralled with it. So, after some not too long considerations, we decided to buy one! After checking out many different stores, we decided to purchase it at Circuit City, where it only cost us $50 with a $150 rebate (which we just got back the other day). Well, the subscription also costs a bit, but it's actually not a bad deal. If you pay $300 up front, you can have 3 years of service, which is the best deal they have, since it comes out to be about $8 a month.
The set up was a bit complicated, but for 2 hardware illiterate individuals, we managed to get it hooked up within an hour. Once the TiVo is hooked up properly, it goes through a series of set up and installations that take about another hour, but believe me, it's worth the wait!
The dual tuner is amazing, you can record 2 live shows at once, plus watch a previously recorded show at the same time. Amazing :) The interface is very user friendly and easy to navigate through. There are also a bunch of video tutorials that can be helpful if you are lost.
With TiVo, you can set up season passes for your favorite TV shows, that way you never miss an episode. Also, the TiVo is smart enough not to record the same episode that had previously been recorded within 28 days. But, that feature is changeable. You can also set it to only record NEW episodes and no reruns.
The only people I wouldn't recommend this to is anyone with sattelite TV. When we stayed with my boyfriend's parents for 2 months, we brought our TiVo along and hooked it in their guest room. His parents have direct TV and it was REALLY a pain to hook the TiVo up to it. The channel changing device never worked properly and most shows wouldn't record on the right channel. Also, with sattelite TV, you can only record ONE show at a time, so it basically works like a single tuner.
Oh, and one more thing that may be considered a con is that even though it states that it can record up to 80 hours, the only way to actually get 80 hours worth of stuff is to record everything at BASIC quality, which honestly doesn't make ANY difference to me, but some people may find that annoying.
