Author's Review
I actually saw this movie a long time back, some time in March 2002. I liked it so much that I actually saw it twice in theatres with my husband. So I would not say that yes, but I will watch it on video!, as epinions suggest. I have actually seen it twice in theatres.
The movie is adaptation of JRR Tolkein's book by the same name. The book is in three parts and this movie is just the first part, the two other parts are to be released in 2003, 2004 Christmas time. Too bad, I have to wait for them so long.
The story line: The story revolves around a ring in ancient ancient times, when humans were only one of the races. There were more interesting creatures like hobbits, elves, dwarves, orcs and the like. In such a time there is one very powerful ring that has evil influence of unimaginable magnitude. There are actually nine such rings but the one ring is the most powerful. After a long battle that concerns us briefly in this movie the influence of he ring is destroyed for the time being and the ring lays quietly for a long time.
But soon it is found by a hobbit and now it is trying to get back to its master so that evil and dark can raise its head again. Can the races of the time save themselves from the peril? Well the movie is the first part of this wonderful saga.
The characters: Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) is the hobbit who found the ring, or rather whom the ring found. The movie starts with his birthday celebrations and my my what a celebration turns out to be! Why? here is why.
Because Gandlaf (Ian McKellen) is a wise wise wizard and can do wonders with smoke, light and fire and he has made some wonderful magical firework for his old friend Bilbo.
The bash is still more enchanting because Frodo (Elijah Wood, Bilbo's nephew) is quite excited about it and suspects that there is something to Bilbo's ring and he is up to something.
Then Merry and Pippin (Dominic Monoghan and Billy Boyd) have their own plas to make it more magical, they steal Gandalf's firework and set them off early!
Then there is shy Sam (Sean Astin) at the party and later trie to overhear magical conversation between Gandalf and Frodo and ends up in an adventure. Why only Sam, all the above end up in an adventure
They are joined by humans Strider or Aragorn (Viggo Morentson) and Boromir (Sean Bean), elve Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli the drawf (John Ryhes-Davies).
This party is on a mission to destroy the ring.
What was absolutely magical about the movie?
1) The locals in which the movie has been shot in, that is New Zeeland. And the way it has been depicted it looks really like an ancient magical land.
2) The special effects, particularly the mines of Moria, the eye and Saruman's fortress, particularly where Galdalf has been captured.
3) The actors and their work is also to be praised, they do look like part of an ancient set up and are absolutely smashing as tribes of long lost ages.
4) Aragorn, I mean he is dashing, handsome and oh so good to look at!
5) The dark riders, they do drive terror into hearts whenever they appear on the screen.
6) The music, as it goes very well with the situations.
7) I guess mines of Moria need special separate mention. What I liked a lot was a particular way of depiction, when these people are at ease in the mines and not walking through peril, they walk in a neat line, but when they are chased by evils, they all run like hell, in a group all hotch potch. Somehow this scene stayed with me.
8) Gandalf and his role in the adventure is again captivating. The emotions that he evokes from the party add to the movies magic. The role has been played quite well by McKellen.
9) The battles in the movie, they are on a grand scale.
10) The light moments provided by Merry and Pippin.
Overall it is a must watch, just don't compare it with the book. The book paint it on a different more leisurely canvas, movie is entirely a different medium. Keep this in mind and you might be kind to the movie.
