Author's Review
Lizzie McGuire is cables top rated show, and has been for two years, occasionally getting bumped off by The O'Reily Factor and Trading Spaces. The show has scenarios which kids can relate to, like getting your first bra or which clique you fit into. The movie, on the other hand, has a plot which very few, possibly no adolescent could relate to, but that doesn't mean that this movie is the most entertaining movie you can see with your mom and dad this summer.
The movie opens with none other than...Matt McGuire, played by Jake Thomas, who is funnier and better in the movie than he ever was in the show, secretly videotaping his older sister, Lizzie (Hilary Duff) for blackmail while she is dancing in her bedroom. The clutzy teen queen is getting ready for her 8th grade graduation, and she looks more beautiful than ever. At her graduation, Lizzie discovers that due to the absence of the perfect president of the Student Council, she, as Secretary Treasurer, must deliver the departing speech, and what does she do, c'mon, you've seen the previews! You know that she trips and pulls down the curtain, covering everyone in the golden cloth.
In an attempt to escape from the reality of ruining her graduation, Lizzie embarks on a class trip to Rome, the Eternal City. With the absence of her best friend Miranda, played by Lalaine, whose character is not in the film, Lizzie and Gordo (Adam Lamberg) travel in search of adventure. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD THAT OUT OF A CUTE AMERICAN GIRL? After a teary departure from her Mom (Halie Todd) and Dad (Robert Carradine), Lizzie boards Air Lufthansa en Route to Italia.
Along with the hilarious Miss Ungermayer, Lizzie, Gordo, Ethan, and Kate dpend a day seeing the sites. At a Gelato shoppe, Lizzie is approached by Italian pop star Paolo (Yani Gellman with the worst Italian accent in the history of Hollywood), as she is mistaken for his singing partner, Isabella (also played by Hilary Duff in a horendously fake looking wig). THE PLAN (according to Paolo): to give Lizzie the glam treatment so she can pass as the real Isabella at the International Music Video Awards, where they are scheduled to sing a duet. WHY NOT THE REAL ISABELLA?: because she is mad at Paolo for wanting to be in their group anymore. Paolo reveals to Lizzie that Isabella Lip-Syncs (GASP) and that he wants to move on to bigger and better things. THE REALITY: well then i would be giving away the whole movie!
This movie unfolds as an awfully cute family film, whose ending holds a clever twist. It will be widely enjoyed by kids, teens and adults.
