Author's Review
I have been obsessed by "The Godfather" saga, ever since I went to see the first two films in the movie theater as a kid. Even at that age, I knew masterful filmmaking when I saw it and Francis Ford Coppola produced a work that still stands head-and-shoulders above the numerous "pretenders to the throne" made by those who want to imitate his success. It still fascinates me how Coppola is able to make me feel both admiration and disgust for the murderous Corleone clan and how he weaves the story into a seamless tale of love, death, honor, loss and betrayal.
While I continue to be mesmerized by "The Godfather" and "The Godfather II", "Godfather III" seems an odd partner with these two films. I could very well have done without the third film being included in this collection. I don't find myself as emotionally attached to the characters and the casting of the monotone-voiced Sophia Coppola definitely detracts from the quality of the third movie.
Still, I think having all three of the "Godfathers" films is worth the cost, especially if you are, like me, a film collector. Sometimes you have to take the bad with the good and even Coppola's worst is considerably better than most filmmakers' worst.
