A DVD set that's begging for a home! (1999-2000)

Date of Review: Mar 6, 2006

The Bottom Line:  There are very few shows which I wish to own...and this is one of them!
The Show
I already wrote a long write up on the Family Guy and what it's all about so you can read about that here: The Family Guy. Below is a short recap:

Peter is the father who is an idiot - worse than Homer Simpson! He's always getting into crazy situations. His wife, Lois, tries to keep him in line. Their son, Chris, is probably the dumbest boy alive and their daughter Meg is pretty unpopular in life. Most importantly, their baby, Stewie, is really the smartest one in the family and thinks that Lois is the reason for his demise and is constantly scheming to kill her! Finally, Brian, their smart, talking, walks upright dog is there to add some laughs.

One of the best things about this show is that it references many other movies, people and events basically all the time :) The second best thing is that it has random flashbacks they will throw in to explain some of the lines they say! These two things plus the pure stupidity of Peter and cast make it a laugh a minute. This is perhaps funnier than the Simpsons!

This set contains the first 2 seasons of the show in full with no commercial interruptions :) The DVD set has 4 DVDs in individual miniature cases which is slightly inconvenient. It's not like most sets that have the one thing that contains all the DVDs which means it's easy to lose track of one of the boxes.

The Episodes
These episodes originally aired from 1999-2000. I'm not going to waste your time with a full recap of all 28 shows, so instead here is the list with a few highlights.

1. Death Has a Shadow - with Commentary

2. I Never Met the Dead Man
In this Episode Peter is so obsessed with TV that he barely has time to teach Meg to drive. They show a lot of mock-ups of TV shows like Chips and Star Trek that are just hilarious. Her dad really doesn't teach her the right way to drive! Unfortunately, bad driver that he is he crashes into the TV tower and takes out the Cable for the whole town! Now he's spending the time with his family that they were asking for but ... do they really want it? I love all the TV references in this episode! There's also a great Willy Wonka reference :)

Peter: What can me and you do together? [Lois giggles] Lois, you've got a sick mind!
Lois: Peter, I'm talkin' about making love.
Peter: Oh, I thought you wanted us to murder the children and harvest their organs for beer money.

3. Chitty Chitty Death Bang

4. Mind over Murder
Peter punches a loud obnoxious woman at a soccer game because he thought she was a man and he gets sentenced with House Arrest. He is so bored that he builds a bar in his basement which Lois dislikes at first, but begins to like when she fulfills her dreams of being on stage is the hit act of the bar!

[Stewie stumbles up to Lois]
Stewie: HellO mother, care to partake in your oh so exhilarating games of "Peek-A-Boo"?
Lois: Oh my god, my baby's drunk!
Peter: No I'm not, what, oh him? Oh yeah, he's a real light weight

5. A Hero Sits Next Door
6. The Son Also Draws - with Commentary

7. Brian: Portrait of a Dog
It's very hot in town so Peter gets Brian to enter a dog show so they can afford a new air conditioner. However Brian fails and ends up getting in such an argument with Peter and leaves! Can he survive on his own? Or will he end up in the Dog Pound. This is one of a few episodes where Brian actually must act like a dog which is funny because he usually acts like a person!

Peter: [during the dog show] I now command you to leave. Yep, keep going. Yep that's right. Yep flip me off. Good boy!

Peter: This is the one thing I ever asked you to do for this family. Well this and not do that thing when you drag your butt across the carpet.
Brian: Oh, 1 time I did that, 1 time!

An example of a funny flashback is when Chris says "not like that time dad hit that deer" and the flashback shows Peter looking over a car crash...with the other car being driven by a dear! So it's funny because you think one thing and then you see the flashback and it's usually not what you think.

8. Peter Peter Caviar Eater - with Commentary

9. Holy Crap - with Commentary
Peter's dad retires by force and moves in with the Griffins. He hates Lois because she's not Catholic, and he makes sure she knows it all the time. He also is very sure to tell everyone in the family everything they do that is wrong. Stewie's the only one that takes to the bible stuff :)

Peter: We all love the bible in this house.
Francis: Really? What's your favourite book of the bible.
Peter: Umm... the one where Jesus swallows the puzzle piece, and the man in a big yellow hat has to take him to the hospital

Stewie: [reading the Bible] My, my. What a thumping good read! Lions eating Christians, people nailing each other to two-by-fours. I say, you won't find that in Winnie the Pooh.

Francis: [pounding on the bathroom door] Open this door! I know what your doing in there, and it's a sin! If you ever do it again, you'll burn in hell!
Chris: But I do it everyday, sometimes twice.
Francis: Mark my words, lad. You may think you're alone in there, but God's watching. Don't do it again!
Chris: God's watching me do number 2?

10. Da Boom
It's the Millennium episode! Peter hears a rumor that the world is going to end and creates himself a safe room in the basement and forces the family down there too. Turns out he was right as disasters start happening all around the world...and Peter's family is one of the few families alive. It's a funny take on the end of the world :)

11. Brian in Love
12. Love Thy Trophy

13. Death is a B*tch
After a short time in the hospital, Peter skips paying bills by saying he's dead. This works great til Norm MacDonald, I mean "Death" arrives. Peter hurts death and is forced to take over his job for awhile. It's funny watching a normal person "play" death! Plus death is a real pain in the but as he stays at their house. Oh yeah, and then there's Peter doing some very deadly things since he knows he can't die while Death is at his house!

Death: What did you make this hot chocolate with? Crap?
Lois: If you want me to make you another, just say so.
Death: I just thought you would make it with milk. Instead of crap.

Meg: You could kill all the girls that are prettier than me.
Death: Well that would just leave England.

Lois: We'll miss you death.
Death: Hey, don't worry. I'll be back really really soon. hahahahaha.. Is he joking? hahahahaha Ok. See you later!

14. The King is Dead
15. I am Peter, Hear My Roar
16. If I'm Dyin', I'm Lyin'

17. Running Mates
This is one of my favorites. Lois is running for school board unopposed, until Peter hears his favorite teacher is getting fired! Lois refuses to keep him on so now Peter is running for school board against her :) Now we see Lois's Red "Griffin for President" signs next to Peter's Blue "Griffin for President" signs. The best is when Peter starts to run a smear campaign against his own wife!

Lois: I win by default!
Peter: Great, you can get Mr. Fargas his job back.
Lois: I'm sorry! but I do have a mind of my own and I happen to agree with the school board's decision.
Peter: Yeah, yeah. I know you're a feminist, and I think that's adorable but this is grown-up time and I'm the man.

18. A Picture's Worth a Thousand Bucks
19. Fifteen Minutes of Shame - with commentary
20. Road to Rhode Island
21. Let's Go to the Hop - with commentary

22. Da**it, Janet!
Stewie finds a crush named Janet. What's really funny is that he's such a smart boy and all the other babies don't nearly speak as intelligently as him...especially not Janet. Can babies really fall in love? This episodes the best!

Brian: Well well well. Looks like someones in love.
Stewie: HA! That's so funny I forgot to laugh... excluding that first Ha.
Brian: Face it your a sucker for women with blue eyes
Stewie: Ahha! Here eyes are green!
Brian: Ahha! Thank you for proving my point.
Stewie: Damn!

23. There's Something About Paulie
24. He's Too Sexy for his Fat - with Commentary
25. E Peterbus Unum - with Commentary
26. The Story on Page One
27. Wasted Talent
Lois is so obsessed with winning the talent show that she is even willing to let Peter play... problem is he only plays great when he is drunk! But that's not even the best part...the best is that Peter wins a trip for him and his friends to go to the Beer Factory and a whole Willy Wonka theme ensues - my favorite movie in beer form! Complete with Chumba Wumba songs :)

Lois: Why do you care so much about touring a stupid brewery?
Peter: Lois, everyone has their sanctuary. The Catholics have churches, fat people have Wisconsin, and I have the Pawtucket Brewery.

Beer Man [singing]: Take a drink, and you'll sink to a state of pure inebriation. You'll be tanked like the whole Irish nation! When you drink enough of my beer, you will find this magic rule, make your every joke a jewel. You'll drive drunker than Oksana Baiul

28. Fore, Father

The Commentary
The episodes listed above have commentary from the creators that is supposed to explain the show a little more and what the references in the episode mean. It's interesting, but a little boring as if it's FORCED. Like they don't know what to say so they are just talking and not really interested. Some parts of the commentary are worth listening too, but after hearing a few of them I decided not to listen to many more. My Simpsons seasons have commentary that is way more entertaining! I feel like these people didn't understand what commentary is supposed to be. Oh well!

Behind the Scenes Featurette
This is an interesting but short behind the scenes of how the show came about and what they were thinking when the designed the characters. You also get to see the actors behind the voices when is funny because I recognized some of them but would have never guessed based on their voices in the show. There are some quite famous people like Seth Green, and that one girl from Mad TV, Alex Borstein.

This is the only "extra" on the DVD besides the commentaries and this is the only place the set is lacking. It really needed more extras - more of a reason to purchase!

For who?
For those of you who have been with this show from the very beginning- you must buy this! For those of you who just recently started catching the new episodes- see where it all started! For those of you who just think it sounds funny based on this review- check out a few episodes on TV first, then buy this set! This is an adult oriented show for 16 and over! No kids please!

The End!
So is it worth it to by the set when you can see reruns on TV? I say YES! This set will help when there is nothing on and you just want a laugh, or when you have friends over and are looking for some easy entertainment, or even when the Cable goes out do to a storm! I really find humor in every Family Guy episode and I'm sure my boyfriend will own every set that comes out! Catch the Family Guy and have a blast laughing at our own crazy world! I love the references to other shows and events that you will see in almost every episode! It's just a lot of fun :) Enjoy!!!
