A fantastic read!

I found this book sitting on the "recommended" shelf of my college bookstore in 1997 and I was intrigued by the title. I too am mixed race (Asian/white) and do not often run across books about the subject. Instinctively I bought the book and began to read it right away (nevermind the 300+ pages I should have been reading for classes!), and I was not disappointed. I was moved by the story and Mr. McBride did an excellent job explaining the backgrounds and feelings of the people at the center of the story. Since this book I have run across others trying to do the same sort of story telling, and few have been able to meet the calibur of Mr. McBride. As a mixed race person and as an ethnic studies major, I would highly recommend this book! I read it very quickly and likely will read it several times more in the coming years.

Along a similar vein but different style, Aimee E. Liu's "Face" is also a good book, though I am not sure if it is still in print. The story is of a quarter-Chinese girl (like the author) who grows up in Chinatown, and in her adult life returns to face the past of herself and her father.
