the cold war accordding to seuss

Dr. Seuss does a great job in this book boiling down what the evils of war and weapons are, down to a child level. He even makes a statement about the cold war at the end of the book.

I will tell you what the cold war was for those of you who did not live thorough the cold war or study any history about it. The cold war was the time after World War 2 to about the early 90's. The Untied states and Russia was in an unofficial war with each other. Both had nuclear missiles and both had their finger poise on the button. The problem is that if any of the missiles where fired there was a good possibility that both sides would be destroy, if not the whole world. Luckily this never happen or else you would not be hear reading this epinion.

Back to the book. The book is basically has two sides, the blue side likes their toast butter side up, and the orange likes there butter side down. Does this seem really stupid to you? Well it is, but it does illustrate the point about how stupid some wars can be.

The story is basically told by one of the troops on the blue side. They start off fighting each other with slingshots, then with mechanical and goofy looking weapons. The problem is that the second that one side develops a new weapon, the other side comes back with a bigger better weapon. Soon the blue side comes up with a missile that will totally destroy the orange side, unfortunately the orange side has one with equal power pointed at the blue side.

It sounds like they have a cartoon version of what I describe at the top of the page. They have gotten themselves into a battle that neither side will win. All for which side of toast they will put their butter on. All though what was at stake during the cold war was the economies of each country instead of toast. Who cares about what kind of economy you had when you where about to blow each other to bits. It's kind of pathetic when you think about it.

The book is probably on the 3rd grade reading level. Even though a first grader could read it, they probably won't get what Suess is talking about. Now for those of you who are afraid of violence don't be, it's still Dr. Seuss.
