Author's Review
Ok, so Portal is built off of the Half-Life 2 engine and the game physics and graphics are going to be familiar if youve ever played Half-Life 2. But please, if you arent in to first-person shooters, keep reading. This game is amazing and probably one of the most unique that I have played in a really long time.
This game is a first-person puzzle game. If you played Half-Life 2 then you know that part of the addictive game play is the puzzle aspects, well, Portal takes that to a whole new level. There are no enemies, no real weapons, but still a lot of ways to die. The premise behind the game is that you have a portal gun that you can shoot onto certain surfaces (walls, floors, etc.) which will open up a portal to somewhere else. After you get through the in game tutorial at the beginning, your gun will be capable of shooting two different portals. With two portals you can jump through one and come out the other.
What I love about the game is the balance between difficulty and simplicity. There arent too many secrets to worry about figuring out you just have to use your head and get used to the idea that jumping in a portal will cause you to come out of another one.
The game has a lot of really funny comic commentary and will definitely put a smile on your face as you are jumping in and out of portals. The only travesty is the shortness of the game. I would have to say that for the average gamer the learning curve is probably about half an hour and the entire game will only last 4-6 hours or so.
