Crashed my computer. No tech support even the premium.
Date of Review: Jan 7, 2005
The Bottom Line: Wish I had never used it. The price was for PM bundled with Ghost 9.0. Ghost works ok, at least so far.
The software worked very well initially. I re-partitioned my hard drive to have a separate partition for the virtual memory, for boot magic, and for backup. Symantec Ghost requires a separate drive for backup.
I also re-partitioned my external USB hard drive. Very slick.
Then one day I re-sized the main partition. It terminated with an error, "missing attribute". It has an emergency boot, which I tried, and it found error 1516, 1517, and a flock of lost clusters. Error 1516 is in the user guide and it says to run Chkdsk /F. However, Chkdsk reported it could not even find the missing partition. The user's guide does not have an entry for error 1517.
They list a "Priority Care 800 Support" number for $30, so I called that number. Turns out that you must first have a priority id to use the service. Have go to the web to get it. Well, I have some spare computers, so no worries. I followed the instructions, and eventually came to a screen that said
Provider error '80004005'
Unspecified error
/symantec/CreateOnlineTicket.asp, line 39
So, no priority id.
I called the 800 number, waited 30 minutes, then my call was answered and promptly dropped. I got the fast busy without even getting to talk to anyone.
I've been waiting another 20 minutes now. Really wish I could get the $30 priority support, that seems to be a mirage. Symantec used to have such great products, but maybe fame is spoiling them.
I just waited another 25 minutes in the phone queue and again got dropped without being able to speak with anyone. How do you get in touch with these people? The web site will not give a priority id which is required to pay the $30 to get actual support. They just drop calls from the other queue.
