Introduction
OK, so youve heard of Sports Illustrated, but have you heard of Sports Illustrated for Kids?. Sports Illustrated for Kids basically focuses on the same concept as the dads magazine, but making it easier to understand, and more interesting. This sports magazine has interviews with top players such as, Shaquille ONeal, Nomar Gareiaparra, Randy Johnson, and other sport stars. This magazine mostly focuses on basketball, baseball, and football. But that is not all it focuses on, they sometimes have articles on less familiar sports such as table tennis, racquetball, and even lacrosse! Other than the 16 regular articles, which I will talk about in a minute, they have about seven or eight extra articles that focus on athletes or from time to time a poll.
The Regular Articles
Whats Online? This article focuses on what you can do on Sports Illustrated For Kids website. You can play games, vote in polls, and even tell your most embarrassing story. You can go to SI for Kids webpage at WWW.Sikids.com
Mystery Athlete: This article gives you a picture of the mystery athlete when he or she was young. They give you clues, and from the clues you try to guess who the well-known mystery athlete is.
Letters to the Editor: This article is where the kids can share their contribution to the magazine and send letters to the editor. They may say that a star athlete who was pictured in last months magazine was an inspiration to them, or they may draw pictures. This magazine really encourages kids to send in their contributions.
Sports Shorts: Records that have been recently broken, or if someone very famous retires.
Sports Cards: Has a bio of the player featured on the card. Some are very famous and some are lesser known. The cards also have a trivia question on the back. It is great to play in the car or at home by yourself!
Sports Calendar: Is your birthday coming up? Well so are tons of other athletes! Havent you ever wondered if you shared the same birthday as a famous athlete? Well now you can find out, as soon as it is the month of your birthday turn to the Sports Calendar and look at your date, you may have the same birthday as a famous star!
Stats: This article has some statistics that will amaze you and your friends. Did you know that the most athletes have had their birthday in September? The NBA record for the most free throws made in a row is set by Dominique Wilkins who hit 23 out of 23!That is incredible to me, Im lucky if I get 5 out of 23!
Hotshorts: This article features on young players who rise beyond the limit on a certain sport. Often the players have disabilities but are still flawless in the certain sport. The sports that they are good at are usually sports that you and I are less familiar with. But, it is still a very fascinating article and one of my favorites!
What Do you Think?: This article asks kids for their opinion on a certain issue. For Instance is Nascar Driving really a sport? Is Boxing to dangerous? This article has a kids point of view and their reasoning for what they choose. They also give a percentage of how many agree, and how many disagree. I did agree with the majority often, but now I am just a stubborn mule!
Good Sports: This article focuses on good sports and what they do to be a good sport. It also shows famous athletes like The Mailman, Karl Malone helping kids. It shows that you should be a good sport and winning isnt everything
Created By Kids: Has some fantastic art that your eyes couldnt believe. These kids really do have true talent and send drawings of some of their favorite athletes. It is really good, and they even look like the real players!
Comic Cards: This article has kids making funny captions of sport cards. They are often humorous, but without seeing the picture it wouldnt seem that funny. This is one article you have to check out yourself!
Brain Buster: Needless to say, the name says it all. In this article kids try to answer the Brain Buster and if they are right, they have a chance to win a very good T-shirt!
Whats The Call?: This is my favorite article. This article gives you situations and lets you be the referee. You have to make the call in the situation a referee was. The answers are on the answer's page.
Game Time: This page has tons of fun games and activities. You can play with someone or by yourself; check your answers on the answer page!
Buzz Beamer: Our favorite sports klutz. Buzz Beamer has an exciting and interesting adventure every month. Buzz Beamer is a comic and is often hilarious, but often quite crude! You MUST read Buzz every month, or youre missing something!
The Good
This sports magazine is the best for kids today. The photos and articles are unreal. The regular articles make kids interested and off your hands for a couple of hours! I wish there were more of these magazines for young kids. And what I am going to tell you is quite embarrassing; I often steal my sons magazine and read it myself!
The Bad
The only bad thing is there are to many pages of advertisements. I counted twenty-five pages of advertisements in this eighty-page magazine. Also, this magazine is generally for eight to twelve year olds, but as I said before; I read it!
OK, I want to subscribe.
If you want to subscribe the monthly cost is $3.00, but if you make an annual subscription (13 issues), it is only $30.00! That is a saving of $9.00! Not to include tax youd have to pay at Waldenbooks or your local magazine company. If you want to call their 1-800 number you can at 1-800-992-0196. If you want to write them and pay that way you can at Sports Illustrated for Kids. P.O Box 30654, Tampa, FL. 33630-0654.
And In Conclusion..
In Conclusion, this is clearly the best magazine for young kids today. Their articles are not only interesting, but can teach our young ones something. They will have smile's on their face from cover to cover, and will be asking you daily, Mom/Dad, did I get mail? This makes a good gift, and if they arent asking already they will soon be saying, SI PLEASE!
