Author's Review
When I first subscribed to Sports Illustrated for Kids several years ago, you could definitely call me a tomboy. Yes, I have changed. I started to wear halters, skirts, and heels rather than a tee, Umbros and Nikes. But not everything about me has changed. I still like to keep up with the sports world. And SI for Kids is a perfect way to do so.
Almost every part of SI4K is great for kids. There is a sports shorts section, kind of like "Sports Headlines of the Month", Letters to the Editor, Featured Athlete of the Month, Puzzles, a Strange But True section, and several other intriguing articles. My favorite articles of all are the ones they have every year before any professional sports season starts. They're called "Your Guide to Whatever Sport Whatever Year" and they have listings of each division. For example, in Baseball 2000, the writers predict the overall season rankings in between each division and back up their writing with reasons. Also, the writers show highlights (or in some cases, lowlights) about each team), and try to guess who will win the World Series. All in all, it's kind of cool.
My parents bought me this magazine because it is not only fun and somewhat educational to read, but it is pretty wholesome reading. There aren't a bunch of junky things in there, or articles trying to turn people like Dennis Rodman into a child role model. One other section in the magazine polls kids on "difficult" question. Usually the kids vote morally. That should be a good sign. For example, the issue I am using as a guideline for this issue poses the question, "Should athletes wear tattoos?" and the majority of the kids said "NO!".
From free included trading cards to a kid athlete section called HotShots, this magazine is one unlike any other. Therefore, it is hard to recommend SI4K from another magazine. I guess that I would have to say that if you/your children enjoyed 321 Contact and World magazines, they might like this as well. They're all pretty similar except for the fact that this one has a sports twist...
I really enjoy reading this magazine! Buy it for your kids today!
