Yes, Sports Afield did take a turn for the worse recently but times they are achangin' again.

With the improvements made I would have to recommend the magazine without reservation. They are focusing once again on top quality hunting and fishing prose. Gone are the extreme sports articles. Gone are the slick advertisements (disguised as articles)for kayaks, off-road bikes, etc. They seem to be content to let Men's Journal hawk radical sports' toys. Good tips can be found on hunting and fishing. Each article has an almanac section that dips into the past as well as providing useful information such as lunar phases. There are usually a few features regarding a historical or ground breaking outdoor/wildlife moment.

The magazine suffers from a lack of really great groundbreaking writers. This could be a product of our times. Gone are the Zane Grey, Ernest Hemingway and the like.
