Extremely Dissatisfied with the DVP-CX777ES
Pros:
large capacity
good sound quality
Cons:
too numerous to list
The Bottom Line:
Do not buy this unit, Sony's customer support is extremely poor and both units we have had were defective.

Author's Review
We purchased this product from Fred's Sound of Music in Portland, OR on the recommendation of both the manager and the sales expert after explaining to them that we were looking for a CD Jukebox to be used in conjunction with an Arcam amp and Linn speakers with no TV or monitor present in the room. We took it home, hooked it up and turned it on. The access door opened and closed repeatedly and then the unit turned itself off. After an extended period of time on the phone to Sony's Customer Service we were told to take the malfunctioning unit back to Fred's Sound of Music and get a new DVP-CX777ES. We took the exchanged unit home, hooked it up and turned it on only to discover that we needed a monitor or TV in order to use the player. Great, we bought a small TV in order to access the contents of the DVP-CX777ES, loaded the player with CD's (store bought, not ripped or burned) and discovered that the player would only read the data from approximately 10% of the discs. Great, Sony's disc Explorer allows you to manually enter data to identify the CD's that are not read so we attached a keyboard and started entering descriptive data. Wait! We were limited to only 16 characters per disc so a truncated title only, no artist or track information. There are a number of hardware (Escient, Request, Sony, etc.) and software (Pinnacle, J Rivers, Cinemar, IBTCorp, etc.) products that claim to interface specifically with the DVP-CX777ES through the RS232c serial port on the back of the unit. We could not get our computer to recognize the existence of the Sony player so we called Sony Customer Service yet again (the fifth call) and were told too bad, so sad, we don't support any access to the DVP-CX777ES through the serial port interface, take it to a service center. At this point we basically have the equivalent of a box full of unlabeled cd's and are extremely dissatisfied with the product.

We took the unit to an authorized service center 30 days ago and they were unable to repair the non-functional serial port. The DVD player was sent back to Sony where it remains, we can hardly wait for the next chapter!
