Sonic 2: hitting the nail on the head
Date of Review: Dec 19, 2002
The Bottom Line: Quite possibly the Pinnacle game of the Dreamcast line, do yourself the favor of purchasing a copy!
Yes, yes, yes! This is the model of what a true improvement is - more fun, better looking, and longer lasting! In this sequel, you will journey through a myriad of locations with Sonic and pals (Tails, Knuckles), on a time trial to get assorted badges (Rank A, B, C, D and E). Beyond this basic traditional gameplay aspect lies an excellent storyline, narrated in cutscenes between levels.
What's new since Sonic 1? Vastly improved graphics - more details, levels, rollercoaster loops, faster speeds, beautiful lens flare effects, secret areas, the list just goes on and on... More levels, excellent boss encounters, puzzles, and other surprises. Sega truly outdid themselves with this one.
A welcome new addition lies in the many new permanent items your characters can find and wear, to make the gameplay more fun and interesting.
Each character you play has his/her own theme music. What a wonderful job done with the soundtrack - custom made, professional music tracks WITH vocals - Sega went that extra mile, and it made all the difference!
Just when you thought that was enough, you can play the ENTIRE game over with the evil characters (Robotnik, Shadow, Sonic's evil counterpart, and Rogue, yet another new character).
As before, the Chao garden is back, with many new improvements of its own. Now, your Chao will visibly evolve depending on the animals you introduce it to (they grow tails, feathers, feet, etc). Train your Chao with the good characters, and take them to Chao heaven - train them with the evil characters, and take them to the garden downstairs! As you progress, you can take your Chao to school, where they will learn different feats, such as drawing, music, and singing, all of which make them more attractive to other Chao.
Between the fast paced, awe inspiring action of the game, and the replay of the Chao garden, you absolutely cannot let this one pass you by! This is the prime example of a game that gives you your money's worth!
