Scooby Doo Unmasked
Date of Review: Apr 1, 2007
The Bottom Line: A fun game for big fans of Scooby Doo and platform games. Worth a rent at least, or buy it if you find it cheap.
I'm usually against television and movie-based games, but I decided to give this Scooby Doo game a chance. It certainly lived up to my low expectations.
In this platformer, you play as Scooby Doo. Your goal is to find out why Jed (Fred's brother) has been kidnapped. The rest of the Scooby Doo gang appears in the game as well. They talk to you between missions, and help out at times as well. Shaggy can give you more health, if you collect enough food. You bring clues to Velma, to unlock new areas to play in.
The game follows the typical platformer setup: jumping, attacking and collecting. The jumping and levels itself aren't that challenging. The enemies you fight are usually the same things over and over again in each level, which gets repetitive. Finding the correct items to collect is usually fine, sometimes you miss things but it's not a huge problem. Only a few things are required to be found in order to advance the story.
The graphics are alright, and fit the game well. It seems like you are in the cartoon itself. The characters look and sound like the actual cartoon characters.
As for replay value: there is very little to do after you beat the game. There is a few profiles and different costumes to unlock. Other than that: there is nothing new or exciting if you play the game after you've beaten it once.
The camera is a problems at times. Sometimes you can move it, and sometimes you can't. It should be controlled at anytime, that would've made it easier. At times, you wont know where you are going due to the camera being locked in place.
Another complaint I have is the sound. Scooby Doo repeats the same lines a lot in the game, which gets old quick. The other sounds of the game are fine, but nothing too special compared to most games.
Overall, the game is pretty easy and isn't much of a challenge. You might get stuck on a few bosses, but that's about it. This game is the typical television or movie based game: it felt very rushed. If more time was spent on this, it could've been much better.
