Author's Review
I am one of those "late bloomers" when it comes to any type of electronic device. I always play the "wait and see" game before making any purchases.
I've only owned one other mp3 player (Samsung), which I left behind at LAX in the security line. Very frustrating. I travel a lot for business and needed to purchase a new mp3 player. Also, I needed something manageable for the gym.
My first gut instinct was to go out and get the new Microsoft Zune, which I did. I agonized for about three days over the purchase, not even opening the box. Although Zune was the "in" thing, I recall it's cassette player size, thought about the gym and how it would be too bulky, and then took the thing back.
I've always had luck with Samsung, including my cell phones. And, not wanting to join the I-Pod Nation, I shopped around and found the YPT9. And let me tell you, this little thing is just amazing. Granted, there are other mp3's out there that play video on a silly little screen, will do your laundry if asked, and provide private counseling services ... which is fine if that's what you need. However, if you are looking for a nice, compact, clean, and well designed mp3 player this one is DEFINITELY for you. The display is absolutely brilliant, the controls are easy to learn, and the sound is amazing. I would highly recommend you get the gortex case as you won't want to scratch this little piece of machinery.
Naturally I looked at the competiton (Samsa, I-River, etc.). Nothing comes close to the value on this mp3 player. I am a computer savvy guy, and I have to say that the Samsumg Media Studio 5 software takes a bit getting used to. But, once you get it down, it's pretty simple. My only complaint to date is the inability to view your folders from the mp3 player using the software. There are times when I just want to edit the transferred folders on the mp3 player. You cannot do that with Samsung Media Studio 5. The only way to amend the songs on the folder is by performing this using SMS5, and then RE-transferring everything to the mp3 player.
Other than that, I LOVE this thing. In hindsight, I wish I would have bought the 4gig player!
