Samsung's Laser printer for the home
Date of Review: Feb 20, 2007
The Bottom Line: Buy this printer. It's dirt cheap, fast, reliable, and with the easiest refilling in the world, bringing operating costs to under a cent per page.
I was a very pleased owner of the previous version, the ml- 2010 and this one is marginally better. I purchased it because it has a parallel input as well as the USB, but as it turned out we haven't needed that feature. It's a little faster and holds a little more paper in the tray, but the main advantage, like the 2010, is in comparison to inkjets.
If you can imagine life with black and white prints, you'll never go back to inkjet printer. Read this aloud: "One page prints right after the previous One page prints right after the previous One...". It's that fast.
As for the cost of toner, the cartridges are easily refilled. Buy the toner for $6-10. Unscrew two screws on the end of the cartridge that has the metal contacts. Gently pry off the end piece. Inside you'll see a plastic plug. Remove that by prying and rocking it up and out with a knife blade. Pour in the powder, replace the plug, replace the cap, replace the two screws and you're done.
After about three uses, there is an over-flow reservoir that overfills. Remove the two screws from the TOP of the cartridge. The piece that lifts upward is filled with rejected toner. There is a small hole at each end. Tap tap tap tap (five minutes) onto a piece of newspaper to remove the powder and you're ready to go another few batches of toner. The report is that the drums last for three uses (two refills), but I'm on my fourth refill and do not observe any decrease in text quality.
The only real Con is that it requires system 10.3 to run on a Mac. I seem to be surrounded by 10.2.8 iMacs.
