Author's Review
The Sony Cyber shot DSC-S730 is the latest and best in a long line of Sony cameras - the S500, S600, S650, S700. The S730 has a little bit different case style than the others I've mentioned, but I like it a lot more. It has a better feel to it when handling the camera.
The photos are outstanding and the ease of use is great, even for the beginner. Of course, Sony has loaded the camera with a ton of advanced features that make it appealing to the seasoned photographer, too. That's what makes it so versatile - you can set it to "Auto" and it's a point-and-shoot camera or use one of the manual modes and adjust it as you like for just the right set-up to match your shooting conditions. This is a great camera to advance your knowledge of digital photography with. As you learn more, you can do more with the camera.
The manual is very thorough and detailed. The bundled CDROM has all the drivers and photo editing software you are likely to need. Of course, all the cables and accessories are included.
I just wrote a great review on the DSC-S700, but the DSC-S730 is that much better for only a little bit more money. If the S700 was a great deal, the S730 is a STEAL!
The LCD display is large and clear. I recommend covering it with a stick on screen protector to protect against the possibility of scratching (you should do this on any LCD camera!)
Controls are easy to understand and easy to use - They make sense!
I love the fact that it uses standard sized AA batteries (this is always one of my selling points!) You don't have to buy an extra, expensive, special battery pack. It gives you the flexibility to use rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, alkaline, or lithium batteries. I prefer the Ni-MH because I have 2 sets - one in the camera, one in the charger. I also know that if I run out of charge while away from my home or hotel, I can just buy an inexpensive set of alkalines and continue shooting. I haven't tried Lithium batteries in it yet, but I understand they last far longer than alkalines.
The only thing I would have added is a regular, look-thru viewfinder. I often shoot moving objects (racing cars) and I find them easier to follow with the standard viewfinder. If you don't shoot a lot of moving objects, this is no problem for you.
If you only want to buy one camera in the next ten years or so, this is one of the cameras I would put at the top of my recommended list! It's THAT GOOD!
