Author's Review
We needed a gate for the top of our staircase. However, because of the odd angles of the walls, we thought we'd never find a gate that would work. Behold, we found this gate and it has been perfect. Despite the walls being very different on each side, this gate accommodates it. It has several ways to adjust it to fit almost any situation.
Install was the easiest, but we were expected that due to our wall issues. I do not think install would have been as difficult for someone with nice even, straight walls.
It has a nice motion light, but it requires 4 double D batteries. The batteries do not last very long, so we've opted not to use that expensive feature.
The gate is definitely child proof, sometimes Mommy proof. It's not hard to open but it does take coordination and strength. You have to push down on a button while lifting up on the handle.
In our situation, when the gate opens it does not stop by hitting a wall, it continues to swing open beyond 90 degrees. This creates a lot of pressure on the little hinges that the gate rest on. We have broken these hinges a couple of times by over extending the gate way too hard. The parts were easy to get from Safety 1st by phone and also very cheap. I keep a couple on hand now.
I did require SEVERAL screws on both sides, so there will be quite a bit of patch work when it's time to take down. If you think about it though, the more, the safer, right?
We've had the gate for 2 years now and it still looks like the day we bought it. It's easy to clean and very safe.
