Product Review

None too happy as it does not do what I wanted

by   stilllooking ,   Sep 20, 2008

Pros:  It is big.

Cons:  It runs too hot for the supplied recipe book

The Bottom Line:  Look elsewhere if you want a machine that you can leave while away from the house.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

I was looking for a slow cooker that we could turn on when we leave for work and have a meal close to being ready when we return home 9 hours later.

The first recipe I followed left the chicken well over cooked. I then went to the web and read that many of the recent slow cookers run hotter than prior models including Rival machines.

The next recipe was a boneless leg of lamb that was said to take 8-10 hours on low. This time I used a meat thermometer with the alarm for 145 degrees which is at the lower end of cooked. I left and came back four and a half hours later to a throbbing alarm. The temperature was showing as 155 degrees. Well that struck boneless lamb off as weekday meal.

This morning I thought I had better test the cooking "low" temperature. I put in 4 quarts of water and after two hours the thermometer showed 200 degrees. From what I have read this is at the high end of "low".

I have not tried a "high" temperature recipe.

The supplied recipe book does not seem to match the characteristics of the machine. My guess is that many of the "low" recipes cook quicker than expected.

This is not a suitable machine for someone who wants to leave and expect a close to done meal 9 hours later. It may well work well for those who can watch it cook during the day.
