Product Review

Works great but gets really hot!

by   lydia667 ,   Jan 10, 2008

Pros:  Works great, looks great and is easy to clean.

Cons:  Cannot be used in a conventional oven, gets hotter than older models.

The Bottom Line:  It's a great cooker with good features for a excellent price. Generous size that's great for families. It does get hotter than older models but that can be accommodated.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I have had this pot for over a year now and have used it numerous times. I have not used the smaller pot that comes with the set. With a family of 5 it just hasn't been of use for us.

If you are used to the older models of Rival crock pots this one will get to hot for you But I will also post my water test results so that you can take the heat difference into consideration.

Another thing, these new models have a thinner glass lid with a plastic handle so they cannot be used in a regular oven.

I have used this cooker to make everything from roasts to bread items and it cleans up easily each time. And the lid fits easily in the dishwasher.

For the water test I used this model of crock pot and a older model with just the knob on front for off, low and high settings. The older crock pot wasn't more than 6 years old.

This is how the water test went....

I filled both my crocks within a couple inches from the top and turned them on the lowest settings 1st. I left them on for 2 hours untouched with the lids on before taking the 1st reading and then left them sit for a hour after each time increasing the temp before taking the next reading.

These are of course taken in Fahrenheit and I used my digital meat/candy thermometer for the readings.

in order of "warm", "low", "high" settings

Smart pot: 122, 154, 174
Older pot: na, 127, 167

As you can see the new models get much hotter than the older ones. But if you know this you can accommodate for it.
