This was my first deep fryer. I am currently looking for a larger fryer with a few more bells and whistles such as a fry basket. I am encountering difficulty though in finding a product that uses shortening. Many of them say it is "not recommended."
That's one of the best parts about this product. Clean-up is non-existent. I lay down a couple paper towels and I don't even have to watch for splatter. Then, when I'm done frying, I just let the shortening cool and re-solidify in the fryer. No draining, funneling, etc. Whenever the shortening gets to dirty, just use a spatula to empty it into the trash and clean the fryer out then.
I have had this product a couple years and I eat a lot of deep fried foods, so that probably equates to MANY years for most people. Pizza Rolls, Cheese sticks, and chicken tenders are a staple of my diet, and the GranPappy has performed admirably without a single trouble.
If you eat a lot of deep fried foods, have a relatively large family, or like to entertain guests, the GranPappy is right for you. If you only like to eat a few cheese sticks now and again, you might want to consider getting one of the smaller versions, such as the Fry-Daddy or the Fry-Daddy Jr.
