Author's Review
I bought a 1990 Pontiac 6000 SE in 1991 for $10,000, with the hope that the four wheel drive would come in handy since I live in a place where winter and snow lasts for about 5 months out of the year.
Although the features of the car (four wheel drive, anti-lock breaks, electric seats, four door) are what drew me to the car, after having spent upwards of another $2,000 on repairs just in the last two years, I can safely say: If you are in the market for a four wheel drive vehicle, this is not the one for you.
The car's four wheel drive, if used for anything less than a foot of snow, seemed to damage my breaks each winter for some reason. Perhaps because of the car's weight, which is considerable. At times, the four wheel drive wouldn't lock back to normal mode, either, which was quite frustrating.
The underside pipe of the car (I'm not a mechanic, however) has had to be replaced twice already in the last four years due to the car sitting so low to the ground, it tends to scrape on every little bump.
The computer chip replacement for this vehicle costs around $200 and we've had to replace it twice, also.
Overall, I feel safe in the car: the heaviness of the car, it's ability to handle corners (rack and pinion steering), and great handling in the snow.....are a few of the benefits. Would I buy this car again? I doubt it. I would prefer to look around for a pickup or something of that class which is also four wheel drive and made for rough weather.
