This video game started it all. The pokemon craze began as this wonderful game title for game boy. I love this game. !
It is a standard RPG (role playing game). That means there are battles between characters you train (the pokemon) and computer-generated creatures. You are a kid going on a quest to become the greatest pokemon master, and to catch all 150 pokemon in the game (not including mew: #151). To do that, you've got to catch wild pokemon and train them in battles against other trainers. There are many pokemon TYPES. These types describe what attacks your pokemon can use. It's a lot like a big game of rock, paper, scissors, because each type is strong or weak against other types.
The plot of the game itself is a classic one of video games from nintendo: a little kid goes on a quest against all odds and proves to the world that he is the best. That's fine. It shows kids to always try for what you believe in. And all that wonderful inspirational stuff.
But what makes pokemon a great game, and what makes it stand above all others rpg's is the infinite possibilities one can achieve when training their pokemon. There are 150 pokemon in all, and each individual pokemon has statistics just a little bit different than any other. No two pokemon are alike, even if they are the same species (like two jigglypuffs). And a trainer can have up to six pokemon with them at a time.
In most rpg's you don't get much of a choice of what characters you are stuck with, and you have to work your butt off to get them to be strong. Not so in pokemon. You can replace an old, useless pokemon with a new, strong one any time you like (if you caught one). Plus, there are things called TM's and HM's that allow you to teach really great attacks to your pokemon. Because the player gets to choose, train, and name their pokemon, they really seem like real pets sometimes. Pets you don't need to clean up after!! ^_^ what fun!
The variety of different outcomes to this game make it an excellent choice for gamers of ALL ages. You can even link up to other gameboys and battle your pokemon against a friend. I have spent countless hours playing the game myself. It just never gets dull.
Its economical, less than $30 to buy, portable because its a gameboy title, and versatile because you can uplink your game to pokemon stadium for nintendo 64 (also a great game, though I've never played it).
THIS GAME JUST ROCKS ! ! ! ^_^
