Author's Review
I love Pokemon, so I knew way in advance that this game was coming. I couldn't wait. I reserved a copy as soon as I could and picked it up on the very first day. I have to say I was a little skeptical. I mean Pokemon Blue/Red was already one of the best RPG games you could buy. I wondered if Silver/Gold would actually be an improvement. The first few minutes of game play ended these doubts. Soon I was totally engrossed. I finally stopped when I realized it was one in the morning!
First of all, the graphics are way better. Because the game was made for Gameboy color, the game is filled with bright colors. This in itself enhances the graphics, but it's not the only improvement. The images in the Pokedex are much better. The Battle Screen graphics have also been improved- Under the HP meter, there is a new meter that measures how many experience points your Pokemon needs to level up. Also the moves look way better!
There are also tons of new locations to explore. You start out in Johto. Much later in the gameplay, you get the chance to return to Kanto, the world of Blue/Red versions. A word of warning for players of the original games: Kanto is definitely not as you remember it. Many places are changed or cut out of the game altogether. Even so, it was fun to re-explore.
As if new graphics and new places weren't enough, 100 new pokemon were added as well. The new pokemon are truly fantastic! Many of them learn brand new, very powerful attacks, in addition to the older ones. Also, two new types, dark and steel were added. These new types change battle slightly because of their type advantages/disadvantages.
All in all, I'd say that Pokemon Gold/Silver is an awesome game and a definite improvement on Blue/Red versions.
