Author's Review
This phone has been meeting our needs of our office for over a year now. It is nice and compact, about the size of a small flip cell phone. It has a 10 number speed dial and operates at 900MHz. It is a bit expensive; I wish I could afford to have one at home. I have found it for as low as $94. http://www.wantphones.com/ct10.html
We have four of these phones in our office. We use them in conjunction with a Konexx adapter designed for our phone system. This allows people to move around and still use all of the features of our Nortel phone system, including Feature keys and answering and placing calls. Plantronics offers a Headset Lifter which sort of allows you to remotely answer calls, but the Konexx adapter is the only thing that allows you to use your cordless phone as if you are using your desk phone.
With our four phones, we have never had a real problem with them interfering with each other. The reception is good no matter where we are in our 5000 sq ft office space. Some other good features are that the battery lasts the whole work day and the mute key works well.
One flaw is that because the battery is also the belt clip, the point of contact is easy to break. This is usually only a problem if the phone is dropped. I found a case made for this phone that has its own clip, which eliminated the problem. The case is $12.95 and you can find it at http://www.ahernstore.com/6007701.html Other than that, the phone takes a beating pretty well.
Another drawback is that the volume keys are actually the pound and star keys, so you can't adjust the volume without "beeping" in the caller's ear.
When I say "the only phone like it", it's because VTech made a similar phone for a short time, retailing for about $50 (the VTech 1411, I think). We have one in the office. It works well, but it isn't manufactured any more.
One last thing, we have had to replace the headset itself, which costs about $20. They just seem to wear out. If yours begins to make crackling noises, you can clean the connector with alcohol and then put WD40 on it before plugging it back into the phone. This tip is direct from Plantronics technical support.
