Product Review

It plays everything you put in it. At a great price.

by   gsabato ,   Aug 13, 2004

Pros:  Plays most video formats including Divx and Xvid and is priced right.

Cons:  Minor flaws in the interface fixed by the bios update or will be fixed soon.

The Bottom Line:  It plays everything from DVD to Divx and Xvid. If you have a bunch of movies downloaded or in Divx format this is a must have.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this DVD/DIVX/MPEG/VCD player so I could make use of my Divx collection but I got way more than I bargained for. I found the DVP642 online at walmart.com. I called several walmart locations in my area but none of them seemed to have any in stock. I was getting frustrated because I am in to instant grarification and I hate ordering online and having to wait for something like this. I had pretty much given in and was ready to place the online order and then the unexpected happened. I was out shopping at a Target store by my house and there it was the Phillips DVP642 and it was the last one. I immediately grabbed it and put in my cart. I paid $69.00 for the best piece of electronics that I have ever purchased.

I got home and immediately set out to get this player hooked up. I was pleased with it's slim design and modern look. Hook up was quick and simple. Everything integrated in through my surround sound set up and I was ready to pop in a Divx disc to test my new toy. Even though the product claims that it plays Divx and MPEG-4 I was expecting the worst but within seconds my movie came on and I was over joyed.

I have found this system to be very simple to use from either the remote control or from the control panel on the unit itself. The player offers up to 8x fast foward and reverse play, zoom, chapter ship, return to menu and resume play on dvd's. Progressive scan is optional for those of us with digital or HDTV and with a choice of Component, coax, or digital audio the player will hook up to almost any surround sound reciever.

The player is has a similar interface to cheaper model DVD players such as Norcent or Apex and the systems bios is defineatly not the most advanced but the bottom line is that it plays just about every video format imaginable and is upgradeable via a flash rom bios. Phillips already offers a bios upgrade for help with subtitles for Divx movies.

I do notice some problems with older Divx files. Mostly audio and video sync will go off from time to time. I have also noticed that unlike most software players pausing the movie will fix the problem.

Formats I have tested include

1. DVD
2. Divx 3.x and up
3. Xvid ( all versions )
4. Mpeg 1 and 2
5. VCD
6. SVCD
7. DVD and - r
8. DVD and - rw
9. MP3
10. PCM
11. WAV
12. CD audtio
13. CD-r
14. CD-rw
15. JPEG
16. Kodak Picture Disc

I have yet to find a file that this player will not play.

For the cost this is the best multi source video player available on the market.
