Product Review

great little thing

by   kmostrach ,   Sep 16, 2003

Pros:  Size great for travel; easy to use; bright colors; index card-size screen was fine.

Cons:  $399 is quite expensive just for the luxury of entertaining myself on a long flight.

The Bottom Line:  Great for travel; may need pretty good eyesight for small screen.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this for a long plane trip. The size is so nice and convenient that the player easily fit in my purse. (5.5 in x 6.5 in x 1 inch, roughly) The feature film on the flight was "From Justin to Kelly" featuring the kids from American Idol. I would rather stare at the back of the seat in front of me than watch that nonsense so I loaded up on DVDs for the trip. I looked all over for a portable DVD player, including a little known brand at Costco (heard of a complaint that it didn't hold a charge, so didn't buy it). I had narrowed it down to the larger screened Toshiba for $700 but they were out of stock so I settled for the smaller Panasonic. I was very glad I did because of the handy size. I paid $399 at Circuit City. I could have gotten it cheaper over the internet, but I didn't have time. At first I thought the screen's small size would be annoying to watch. The screen is about the size of an index card. It wasn't a problem but may have been if I wanted to share with someone. I was also worried about the battery life. They say you get about a 3 hour charge. I watched very close to that long with no problems. Just in case, I also bought a Memorex 7.2v Lithium battery but I didn't need it. I just charged the player in the hotel room for the trip back. Expensive noise cancelling headphones helped on the plane. With cheap ones you need the volume on maximum in order to hear, further draining the battery. The picture was bright and clear and I didn't even need to read the instructions in order to operate the player. The screen has a tilt feature which is convenient on an airplane. The player can sit on the food tray and you can just tile the screen however you want it. The player also appears to hold a charge nicely over a two week period of time. My Camcorder would be drained by now with non-use. Player also did not heat up significantly like some do.
