As we would look through the software aisles at various stores. I kept seeing Oregon Trail versions 2, 3 and 4. All that ran through my mind was the original one that I remembered having so much fun playing at school WAY back in junior high. Oh how I wanted to buy one!! But, $40 on the price tag was just more than I could afford and also more than I wanted to pay.
Then, while shopping at Alco one day I seen the original version for $15. Yes, I bought it. My kids play this game all the time.
From reading other epinions here, this version is nothing at all compared to the newer ones. Also from reading, I don't even think that I am ready to try any of the newer versions LOL.
The original version only takes about 30 minutes to get through a game.
Fair warning that I have never made it to the end of the game using one of the lowest paying jobs as choice to start the game with. You can't buy enough food and supplies to make it.
I also have never made it to the end with more than myself and 1 other person still alive either.
It very much brings out your imagination as you play. You have to plan ahead on how much food, how much ammo, how many sets of clothing and everything that you will need. Also how many times you will need to stop and rest along the way to maintain the proper health.
You also see a map as you move along the trail. You will meet others along the way. Some of these people are there to trade you for things, others give you bits of history. You must also make decisions on which trails to take as well.
Having not tried the newer versions, I would highly recommend the Original version to anyone first before going on and trying the others. Someday I will buy one of the harder ones.
