My ten year old son is a type 1 diabetic which in a nutshell means that I live in the land of insulin, needles, and blood glucose meters. Of course we couldn't just try one meter and stick with it we had to try every single one that is on the market!
The current favorite is the One touch Ultra mini. With it's compact size and accurate readings, it is a great meter for any user. The Ultra mini is small enough to be carried in your pocket or small purse. It now comes standard in four fun colors, hot pink, neon green, black, and silver.
The One Touch comes complete with the following items:

* Control solution (to calibrate strips and meter)
* One Touch Clear Cap for testing on Fore Arm or Palm

When we ran tests against other popular testers on the market, the onetouch ultra mini gave us blood glucose numbers in the same range +-5 every time. This is extremely accurate for a tester. It was enough to give me enough confidence to begin using it for my own child. With very little blood needed to perform an accurate test (one microliter) this means a smaller finger prick and less pain to the user.
The Ultra Mini is a great blood glucose tester for people that want a basic, no frills machine. It will hold 50 of your last tests in its memory but does not average the numbers. The screen is very easy to read with large numbers running across the length of the meter. If you have a hard time reading the small numbers of some of the other testers this may be a good choice for you. This is why we use this for my son. When his blood sugars are high, his eyesight is bad and he cannot read the other meters well. He does not have a problem seeing the large numbers on this screen.
The Ultra Mini is also very affordable and can easily be found for $14.99 at leading drugstores.
