Great Lecture recorder

I have had the Olympus 3100PC for 6 months. I got this as a gift from a friend. I must tell you that for lectures, this baby is great. It records in Mono (not that I have a need for any more than that). The recording setting I use is the high fidelity and very little compression. I can get 11 hours using this setting. (The unit package claims that up to 72 hours can be recorded.) I have not changed the batteries since I got this recorder. Olympus has picked the WAV audio file format for digital files. I use the Audacity (free) software to convert the audio to MP3 format with no hassle.

The downer is Olympus includes a driver/software disk with this recorder. If you lose or misplace the disk forget about accessing the recorded files. Its not available on their web site as a download, its a $9.00 purchase. This is a shame. This unit is USB compatable. Why Olympus did not allow access to the unit's hard drive using native USB calls is beyond me.

Tips:
The software only transfers a whole folder at a time. It puts the transferred files in your documents application folder (in windows). Using the Olympus software tool once the file is transfered you may drag and drop the file into a more convenient place on windows based system.
