Author's Review
Upon asking if there was anything special I should be doing to help my unborn child's developmental stages progress well (i.e. eat plenty of iron, drink my milk?) my doctor replied, "Just eat wisely and start reading"...uh...but she's only 4 months old????
Nope, it doesn't matter, the forward to this book even goes on to explain that a research study was done in which parents to be read "The Cat In The Hat" to their unborn children for a specified period of time while still in utero...and sure enough, when the kids came into the world, they responded to the story as if they had heard it before...all the children began reading much earlier and had a much better grasp on the the english language than the average late toddler...makes you think huh?
So, I decided I'd start out small (after all, I felt a little bit silly reading to my belly) and picked up "Oh Baby! The Places You'll Go". I haven't even remotely been disappointed.
Theodore Geisel's wife beautifully conveys all of her husband's (The late "Dr. Suess") most cherished stories in just 32 pages!
Each paragraph is dedicated to a different Suess story or "Suessism" that ANYONE who's ever read a Suess story will quickly and easily recognize.
I read to my unborn child, Sophia, every night and I have to say that the amount of activity that picks up during the time I read Suess stories to her is almost uncanny. She seems to really enjoy the rhyme schemes and outlandish made up characters...but probably what she enjoys most is hearing how much I enjoy reading them!
This book is an outstanding gift for any mother-to-be! And for the grandparents as well, there's nothing quite so wonderful as seeing your parents recognize and remember bits of stories that used to delight YOU as a child, and now understanding that their grandchild will have the same love for the language as you did.
