Author's Review
I bought this system back in 98 and had great memories with it. I had plenty of games for it, had some of the accesories for it, and just enjoyed it. It was a great system for the time it was out. I think when I got it it was $150. I can't really remember, I actually got it for my birthday. I still have this system today, but if you touch the carterage or accidentally tap the system. You might as well start from the beginning since it will freeze. It has many good games out for it like Super Mario 64, Mario kart 64, Golden Eye 007, Pokemon stadium, Mario Party (1, 2, and 3) and a bunch of others. Pretty much every game is good for it.
//System// The system is small, takes 1 cartirage for the games, has an expansion pack slot, 1 power light in the front, a reset button, and a power switch. There are 4 ports for the controllers so 4 people can play this system at once. It has 64 bit graphics, and has cd quality sound.
//Controller// The controller design on this system is very unique. There are two ways you can hold this controller depending on the game. There are three spots for your hands. You use your right hand for the right side of the controller and your left hand for the middle part of the controller or the left side of the controller. Most games you use the middle part of the controller for your left hand which has the joystick with most games use. There are a bunch of different buttons on controller. Probally the most in it's time period. It has A, B buttons, like Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Z button, joystick, D pad, 4 C buttons, start, L and R on the top of the controller. None of the buttons are pressure sensitive like PS2, Game Cube, Xbox, so the harder you press them the more powerful things will be in a game (like in car racing games, the harder you press the accelerate button the faster you will go) Unfortinitly this system doesn't have that. There are many different controllers you can get for this system if you are not comfortable with the basic one that comes with this system, but all of them are basically the same except for the look. I still reccomend the one that Nintendo makes, that comes with this system.
//Graphics// The Graphics are very clear on this system, they aren't as great as game systems today since they are only 64 bits. Most systems today are 128, 256 bits, which are double, if not triple the amount of how good the graphics are on this system. But that is only the best they can do. Most games don't use 256. Many games like Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario on this system are in 3-d, and sometimes actually could be as good as PS2 depending on how good the game is.
//Sound// Sound on this system is great. It is in stereo and even some games like Perfect Dark are in Dolby surround sound. All games sound great on this system, just like todays game systems.
//Accesories// There are plenty of accesories out for this system like memory cards, which only a few games need. Most games have a backup save system. But very few need a memory card. There are all different controllers you can get for this system. Some are generic,b ut they won't damage this system. Also all controllers come in different colors. Some are even translucent. There are also expansion packs, and a few others.
I highly reccomend this system to any kid or an adult who is looking for a not to complicated system, that doesn't not have overly violent games, and is just looking for some fun.
Good luck with your decison
